Stuart Heaney

Stuart Heaney is a writer, researcher, archivist and curator. After graduating from his MA in film archiving at the University of East Anglia, he worked as a film archivist for world-famous rock band The Who. Following that, with Professor Charles Barr, he organised and presented an international symposium on the experimental films of 1960s pioneers Don Levy and Peter Whitehead, helping to revive interest in the unfairly overlooked Levy.

Prior to the MA he had worked at the BBC in Bristol, volunteered as a projectionist at the Cube Microplex and organised a tribute concert to Kenneth Anger with the now disbanded Massive Attack-produced psych-soul band Lupine Howl. Following a spell working in television production he joined the BFI in 2007 and has since written for Sight & Sound and Close-Up, among other print publications, as well as for BFI DVD booklets, Screenonline and the Mediatheques. He has curated and presented international experimental film programmes, including at BFI Southbank, CAC Vilnius and Café Oto.
