Michael Haneke received his second Palme d’Or for Amour at tonight’s closing ceremony, while Matteo Garrone’s Reality took the Grand Prix of the Jury.
The Angels’ Share, which was written by Paul Laverty, produced by Rebecca O’Brien and co-financed by the BFI, is Loach’s eleventh film In Competition at the festival. His is the third win for a BFI-backed production at Cannes this year. Fyzal Boulifa picked up the Premier Prix Illy for Short Filmmaking in the Directors’ Fortnight for The Curse, while Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers was awarded the Palm Dog in honour of its canine star, Smurf.
Loach received the Palme d’Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival for The Wind That Shakes the Barley.
The Angels’ Share opens in UK cinemas on Friday 1 June.
