Unlocking Film Heritage wins top FIAT/IFTA award

The BFI’s Unlocking Film Heritage programme has won an award for Best Archive Preservation Project at the FIAT/IFTA world conference in Warsaw.

A jury of international media archive experts said they were deeply impressed by the highly collaborative nature of the BFI’s Unlocking Film Heritage (UFH) project.

The jury said that UFH had brought together expertise and commercial service providers from across the UK nations and regions, forging strong relationships and offering new opportunities throughout the sector. They also praised the many new technologies and processes devised to deliver UFH, citing the way these have transformed how traditional archives work, giving them essential systems and capabilities not only to care for collections but also – and equally importantly – to make them accessible to an ever more digitally connected world.

Unlocking Film Heritage is the in Film Forever and focuses on investing in preservation, digitisation, interpretation and access for everyone in the UK to enjoy. It is potentially one of the largest and most complex archive preservation projects ever undertaken in the UK and is a paradigm shift from analogue to digital for the National Archive.
