After hours spent in mute agony staring at a list of 40 titles, I’ve chosen to prioritise recent marvels over sacred monuments; four of these films were made in the last ten years. Of the old masters, only Hitchcock eluded my broom, although the absence of Kubrick and Polanski grieves me terribly.
