It’s hard for me to think in terms of naming Ten Films That Summarise It All. This list is semi-arbitrary to some extent — all great films that I believe people should watch, but also, to some extent, designed to cover a cross-section of the kinds of films I’m most drawn to. I’m glaringly aware it contains no non-fiction or avant-garde films, contains no films made before 1946, and is entirely composed of male directors. That’s how it goes today.
