In 2000, elderly suburban widow Joan Stanley is arrested by Special Branch officers for breaching the Official Secrets Act, alleging that she spied for Soviet Russia. The action then flashes back to Joan’s younger self as a Cambridge physics student where she falls in love with young communist Leo Galich and finds herself drawn to his pro-Soviet views. When she later works at a research facility developing atomic weapons, Joan comes to the conclusion that the world is on the brink of mutually assured destruction and decides that to maintain world peace the USSR must also have the bomb.
