Drama (based on a true story), with fantasy sequences. Assault victim Mark Hogancamp spends his days photographing the adventures of Captain Hogie, a 1/6 scale model of a Second World War US fighter pilot, in Marwen, a detailed toy town Mark has built in his back yard. Hogie routinely fights alongside the valiant women of Marwen (who are based on the women in Mark's life) against the ongoing menace of Nazis (representing Mark's vicious attackers). When a kind new neighbour, Nicol, moves in across the road, Mark takes a shine to her, but his deep-seated retreat into the fantasy world of Marwen still blocks his ability to connect properly with reality. Adding to his discomfort are his attackers' looming sentencing hearing (where he fears having to see them in court) and an upcoming show in New York of his unusual photographic work, which is being organised by a relative of his friend Roberta, who runs the hobby shop where he buys his models. His recovery is blocked most of all by a doll called Deja Thoris, the witch of Marwen, who (in Mark's understanding) aims to thwart any attempt he can make for mental freedom and a return to normality.
