In Belfast in 1941, 12-year-old Tom Hall accompanies his veterinarian father to the zoo each day, where he develops a deep bond with the animals. When World War II escalates and Tom's father is conscripted into the British army, the fate of the animals is placed in Tom's hands. With rumours that the animals are viewed by the authorities as a risk to public safety during the German air raids on Belfast, Tom forms a plan to move Buster the elephant to a safe location. To carry out his scheme, Tom enlists the help of his friends and they find a suitable hiding place with eccentric animal lover Denise. Tom and Denise work together to keep Buster hidden, but when his health starts to deteriorate, they risk being caught by the authorities when they return to the zoo to retrieve his medicine.
