Amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst enters the first Golden Globe non-stop, single-handed, round-the-world sailing race in 1968. With an unfinished boat and debts that could result in him losing his business and his home if he fails to complete the voyage, Crowhurst sets sail as the rank outsider among a group of nice competitors, leaving his wife, Clare and their children behind in Teignmouth, Devon. Shortly after his departure, it becomes apparent to Crowhurst that he is woefully unprepared and after his initial progress is slow, he begins to fabricate his route, creating a false logbook to support his claim. After his fellow competitors drop out, Crowhurst becomes a serious contender in the competition for fastest voyage. When he receives word from his press officer, Rodney Hallworth, of the recognition and celebrations awaiting him upon his return, Crowhurst’s isolation and fear of potential disgrace if his logbooks are scrutinised result in him entering an introspective and desperate state of mind.
