Paddington, a young bear originally from Peru, lives happily with the Brown family in west London, where he has become a popular member of the local community. While shopping for a birthday present for his elderly aunt Lucy, Paddington sees a pop-up book in Mr Gruber’s antique shop, and tries to save up money to buy it by undertaking a series of odd jobs around the local community. However, the book has also caught the attention of the actor Phoenix Buchanan, a former West End star whose career has declined to such an extent that he is now starring in dog food commercials. When the book is stolen, Paddington is wrongly accused of the crime and sent to prison. The Brown family try to prove Paddington's innocence by discovering the identity of the real thief, a master of disguise who has appeared at various London landmarks dressed as a tramp, a medieval knight and a nun.
