In the late 18th century, Don Diego de Zama, a minor bureaucrat working for the Paraguayan government under Spanish rule in the last stages of the colonial era, is desperate to relocate from his remote regional office to the city where his wife and children live. A letter of recommendation from the Governor, which is required for such a moves, is endlessly postponed and as Zama’s frustrations grow his experiences becomes increasingly hallucinatory.
