Wartime espionage thriller. During the Second World War, disgraced German soldier Stefan Brandt is sent to the Netherlands to protect Kaiser Wilhelm II, who has been in exile there since Germany’s defeat in World War I and who the Nazis now fear could be an assassination target, following their invasion and occupation of the country. In Huis Doorn, a secluded country house, Brandt undertakes his mission and investigates a rumour that a British spy has infiltrated the Kaiser’s household. In the course of his investigations, he finds his allegiances tested when he is drawn into a passionate romance with Mieke de Jong, one of the Kaiser’s maids, who is secretly Jewish. Matters come to a head when the Gestapo discover which local is in secret contact with the British, just as Himmler is due to pay the Kaiser a visit.
