While serving in the Finnish army during World War II, young closeted illustrator Touko Laaksonen develops an erotic fixation with uniformed men. When he returns home to Finland after the war, Touko finds post-war Helsinki to be rampantly homophobic and during his spare time he finds refuge by drawing homoerotic images of muscular men in sexually uninhibited situations. Tuoko gains confidence from the positive reactions he receives after publishing his drawings and his life is transformed when an American publisher invites Tuoko to visit the West Coast.
