Gabrielle, a young woman growing up after World War II in small rural village in the south of France, develops a powerful infatuation with the local schoolteacher. To avoid scandal, her mother quickly marries her off to José, a Spanish civil war refugee working as a bricklayer. Gabrielle reluctantly agrees to marriage but vows that she will never love José. When she is sent away to the Alps to treat her kidney stones, Gabrielle meets and falls in love with André, a lieutenant dying from wounds received in the Indochina War and sees an opportunity to finally escape her loveless marriage.
