In a dystopian future, 12-year-old Djata grows up in a largely agricultural country called the Homeland that is governed by a military dictatorship who have isolated the country from the rest of the world. After his father Peter is imprisoned by the government, Djata and his mother Hannah are labelled as traitors and shunned by society. As Djata and Hannah come to understand the true nature of the regime, they embark on a journey that they hope will reunite them with Peter.
