In August 1715, Louis XIV of France returns from a hunting trip with a pain in his left leg. Over the next month, Louis is confined to the royal bedchamber in the Palace of Versailles where he is surrounded by doctors, courtiers and his closest relatives, who witness the king’s slow decline and death from gangrene of the leg.
