At the turn of the 20th-century, Rafael Padilla, who under the stage name 'Chocolat' becomes the first black clown to play a lead role in a top Parisian pantomime act and his stage partner George Footit help to revolutionise the art of clowning. But the perils of fame and fortune, along with issues related to gambling and racial discrimination test their friendship and threaten their career.
