George Alagiah tells the story of the babies born to white British women and black American GI's who were labelled "war casualties", reflecting the extent of the taboo that interracial sex constituted. However, despite the legal and social restraints imposed on many, mass migration fuelled a boom in mixed-race couples in the postwar years and, by the 1960s, trendsetting rock stars and actors were crossing the racial divide.
