Synopsis
Documentary recounting the mysterious final journey of British explorer George Mallory, who tried to climb Mount Everest on three occasions, and who never returned from his final attempt in 1924. His body was found on the mountain in 1999, clearly on a descent, and without the photograph of his wife Ruth which he had promised to leave at the summit. Mountaineer Conrad Anker, who discovered Mallory's body, attempts to retrace Mallory's ascent in the conditions Mallory faced, to see whether it is feasible that he could have climbed the treacherous 'Second Step', an overhanging ledge near the summit, scaled by today's climbers with fixed ladders, and which would have proven Mallory's last main obstacle to gaining the summit.
