Biographical film about the relationship between Ida Dulser and the young Mussolini, at a time when he was an ardent Socialist, before the First World War. Believing in him and his ideals Ida sells all she has to finance his newspaper, and the two marry in 1914 and have a son. However, whilst he is in hospital in 1915 she is astounded to find he has married another woman, Rachele Guidi. After the War his politics change and when he becomes the Fascist ruler of Italy, Ida and her son are in danger because of his desire to hush up the details of a first marriage and her refusal to keep quiet. Her continued vocal claims and denunciations lead to her being incarcerated in a psychiatric institution.
