Synopsis

Based upon a short story by E.L. Doctrow. Jolene escapes life in a foster home by marrying Mickey, however, she soon finds herself having an affair with his uncle Phil. After they are discovered Mickey kills himself whilst Phil is arrested for statutory rape. Jolene is placed in a psychiatric institution but uses her resources to escape and goes on a search for independence and happiness that takes her across the USA.
