Black comedy, based on a true story and set in 1968. Idealistic Communist Frank decides to move from Bingley, Yorkshire with his family to the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). Wife Dorothy supresses her doubts, whilst Frank soon finds that the ideal Socialist society he envisaged does not exist. Instead the family are affected by bureaucracy, paranoia and surveillance. Dorothy befriends a young boy called Otto, and finds herself caught up in helping him escape to the West.
