Drama. Set in the Karoo, South Africa, in the late 1800s, follows the lives of three children, two girls - Em and Lyndall, and a boy - Waldo. The girls live with their strict Boer stepmother, and the boy is the son of the farm manager Otto. Both Lyndall and Waldo have an intellectual curiosity, with the latter also loving to work with his hands and machinery. Together the children create an ingenious sheep-shearing maching, but then have a run in with a crook, Bonaparte Blenkins, who comes to the farm and woos the stepmother in the belief that she is rich. He causes Otto to be fired, which leads to his death, and is cruel to the children. Lyndall comes up with a plan to set him up, so that his true nature is revealed and he is run off the farm.
