Synopsis
The first programme in a three-part investigation into the life, science and art of Leonardo da Vinci. Episode one follows Leonardo from his illegitimate birth in the town of Vinci in 1452 to the unveiling of his masterpiece, `The Last Supper', in Milan in 1498. Tells how, in learning his craft at the heart of the Renaissance movement in Florence, Leonardo survived arrest and possible execution (under suspecion of homosexuality) to win the patronage of the power Duke of Milan, Ludivico Sforzo. The extent of his scientific exploration is revealed in his notebooks, and the programme tests two of his engineering designs - an armoured vehicle for warfare and a parachute.
