In order to challenge some learners' views on the relevance of language learning, features profiles of people from various backgrounds and of different ages talking about their experiences. Inspired by the European Year of Languages 2001, the twelve case studies featured provide a humorous and humane view of the importance of languages in the lives of the contributors. They include: Gary Lineker, Sir Trevor McDonald, Toyah Willcox, MEP Robert Evans, a ten year-old boy, BMW apprentices, a shop assistant, a website designer and a retired bus conductor.
