The final programme in a four-part series in which Dr Tristram Hunt uses dramatic reconstructions to re-assess the so-called `English Civil War'. Relates the final phases of the war: how whilst the king is held captive, Cromwell's New Model Army is in Putney debating radical proposals about society and democracy. English socialism is born, the king escapes and as Parliamentary troops pour into Ireland, he does a deal with the Scottish Covenanters. A second civil war erupts in England, which is brutally suppressed by Cromwell. The king's fate is sealed, when a death warrant is forced through parliament, King Charles I is executed, and England, Scotland and Ireland are united under a military dictatorship.
