The second programme in a four-part series in which Dr Tristram Hunt uses dramatic reconstructions to re-assess the so-called `English Civil War'. In this programme, he tells how settling old scores in Ireland re-ignites tension between king and parliament. King Charles declares war. Covers the massacre of Protestants at Portadown, the raising of two opposing armies of Cavaliers and Roundheads, both looking to Scotland and Ireland for outside reinforcements, the battles of Edgehill and Marston Moor, and the ascendancy of Oliver Cromwell.
