Film details


A family moves from Puerto Rico to Brooklyn, New York, after the mother discovers that her husband is having an affair. Their oldest daughter Esmeralda 'Negi' Santiago attends a local school and tries her best to learn English and make friends. A guidance counsellor hears her reading some of her own poetry and suggests she enrol in a school for the performing arts - but how does Negi remain true to her Puerto Rican roots?
