Returning to Ireland in 1939 after fighting on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War, William Franklin takes up a teaching job at a Catholic reform school. There he soon comes into conflict with the coldly disciplinarian Brother John. Franklin's desire to help the boys is at odds with the institution's ethos and he and Brother John become embroiled in a war of wills in which the boys finds themselves implicated.
