Reports on efforts being made by Japan to garner the support of poor nations to boost its pro-whaling position in the international arena. Despite widespread condemnation from environmental groups and many governments, Japan is determined to pursue its policy of so-called `scientific whaling' and vigorously argues the case for `sustainable use' in the international forum of the International Whaling Commission and Convention on the Trade in Endangered Species.
