The first programme in a four-part series in which Dr Tristram Hunt takes a journey through Britain and Ireland, re-assessing the civil war using dramatic reconstructions of the key political, religious and military moments. The first programme traces the origins of unrest: three London Puritans are tortured at the hands of their own Protestant church and the arrogant religious policies of Charles I - seen as a move towards Catholicism - divide England. When the king's relationship with Parliament falls apart, the stage is set, but it is in Scotland, not England that the so-called `English Civil War' ignites.
