Drama set in Australia in the late 1950s about the trial of Max Stuart, an Aboriginal man accused of murdering a young girl. A lawyer named David O'Sullivan is given the task of defending Stuart and soon realises that much of the evidence has been fabricated. With the aid of a Catholic priest and a young Rupert Murdoch (then trying to make a success of his first newspaper, 'The News'), O'Sullivan sets about proving Stuart's innocence in the face of overwhelming hostility from the Australian conservative establishment.
