Synopsis

Ninth programme in the second series of `Life' programmes, focusing on the impact of globalisation on the urban environment. Filmed in Barcelona, starts with a short tour of the city's seafront with its chief architect Josep Acebillo and the UK architect and urban planner Richard Rogers, before moving on to a studio debate on the Istanbul +5 process chaired by BBC journalist Steve Bradshaw. Istanbul +5 was a special session of the UN General Assembly convened to review and appraise the implementation of the Habitat Agenda agreed at the second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) held in Istanbul in 1996. The Agenda which was adopted by 171 governments endorsed `the universal goals of ensuring adequate shelter for all and making human settlements safer, healthier and more liveable, equitable, sustainable and productive'. Barcelona is seen as a model 21st century city, combining historic buildings with modern architecture in a fusion that has helped make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.
