The second of three programmes exploring what happened to the Japanese economy in the last two decades of boom and bust. Looks at Japan in the 1990s when the traditional idea of `a job for life' became unsustainable. With the collapse of a system that promised security and a sense of identity, distress grew to such a pitch that, in an event which shocked the nation, one middle-aged manager ritually disembowelled himself in the office of his boss.
