Thirty-one year-old Julie is a good wife and mother, living in a lower middle-class area of New Jersey. Always fascinated by maths and physics, although never having graduated from high school, Julie persuades her best friend Claire to join her in attending a computing course for adults. Her husband, Rick, opposes it, but Julie persists. Fuelled by their success, the two women leave their husbands and set up house together with their children. Julie begins to think of college, but Claire starts to feel drawn towards her old way of life...
