Synopsis

Explores the gulf between the roles demanded by the idealised and relentlessly promoted American family and the reality of domestic life in America in the 1950s - a time when feminist Betty Friedan was giving voice to kindred spirits who were failing to find fulfilment in home appliances and "new and improved" detergents, Sloan Wilson was exploring the dark heart of the male breadwinner's lot in the corporate rat race in `The Man in the grey flannel suit', and writer Grace Metalious was blowing the lid on small-town hypocrisy in her best selling novel `Peyton Place'.
