Drama about the exploitation of Mexican and Salvadorean janitors who work in Los Angeles offices for low wages. A young Mexican woman, Maya, crosses the border from Tijuana to be reunited with her sister, Rosa, who helps her to find jobs, but these prove to be exploitative. Maya manages to get a job as a janitor but is dismayed to find her boss insists on a month's salary to cover what he terms 'commission'. When Maya meets a young American lawyer, Sam Shapiro, they join forces to campaign for justice and better pay for janitors.

Note: the title is taken from an old strikers' refrain, "We want bread and Roses too", bread, a metaphor for wages; and roses, a metaphor for respect
