The water was found to be contaminated by a chromium rust inhibitor, affecting the health in varying degrees of the people living nearby. Despite the best efforts of the company's lawyers to keep the details hidden, and her own lack of education and experience in legal matters, Brockovich's investigations eventually led to a massive lawsuit against Pacific Gas & Electricity.
