Drama. The story is set in New York during the 1940's and focuses upon the real-life character of Joe Gould, a shabby little man who dropped out of 'society' in order to concentrate on writing his masterpiece, 'The Oral History of Our Time'. Joseph Mitchell, a respectable man and writer for the New Yorker magazine, became interested in Gould and his work and wrote two stories about him, which brought Gould to the attention of the public in the 1940's.
