Synopsis
Comedy drama. Set in Patagonia, Argentina, in the early '70s, the surreal comedy unfolds in a tiny hamlet completely isolated from the outside world, where the only form of entertainment is the old films screened nightly. These invariably arrive in a battered state, with reels jumbled and scenes spliced in randomly from other movies or even upside-down (hence the title), transmitting an illogical and manic vision of life which permeates the viewers' own behaviour. The story is told from the viewpoint of Soledad, a woman from Buenos Aires, who ends up in Patagonia thanks to an absurd road accident. Despite its remoteness, the place boasts its own film critic, a young man whose calling has left him with a brain even more addled than his fellow citizens' but who nonetheless wins Soledad's heart. The plot thickens with the arrival of an ageing French matinee idol, who stars in many of the villagers' favourite films and falls for one of the women.
