Romantic drama. On the eve of the Second World War, Mary Panton, an impoverished British socialite, lives in a villa owned by some friends who are presently away. Sir Edgar Swift, a diplomat, wants Mary to marry him and travel to his next posting in India. Just as Mary is considering the offer, her life changes when, one evening at a dinner party, she is seated with an attractive American man, Rowley Flint. After an argument with Flint, she comes into contact with another young man, Karl Richter, whom she almost runs over on her way home following the argument with Flint. Mary spends the night with Karl, who becomes obsessed with her, and events take a tragic turn.
