Horror. Father Andrew Kiernan, working on behalf of the Vatican, investigates a statue of the Virgin Mary in a Brazilian village which apparently weeps blood. This phenomenon and other strange events have occurred since the death of a local priest. When a rosary is stolen from the priest's corpse and sold to an American tourist at a market, the tourist posts the rosary as a present to her daughter, Frankie, back in the United States. When Frankie begins to experience strange visions and seizures which leave her with wounds similar to those of Christ's passion, and to speak and write mysterious messages in ancient Aramaic, Father Kiernan is keen to find out why. Yet his Vatican superior, Cardinal Houseman, seems equally keen that Kiernan should discover nothing.
