Professor Roy Anderson, Linacre Professor of Zoology at Oxford University and Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Epidemiology and Infectious Disease, presents a Royal Institution discourse, detailing the disturbing events of recent history and highlighting some of the crucial mistakes which he believes contributed to the BSE epidemic in Britain. He suggests that BSE may well be an archetypal example of the type of disease that is likely to occur ever more frequently in the 21st century and that lessons must be learned from this episode if future disasters are to be avoided.
