Dr. Sumio Iijima from NEC in Japan presents a Royal Institution discourse, describing his discovery of carbon nanotubes. The tubes, which are some 1000 times smaller than the conventional carbon fibres, have tensile strengths approximately 100 times that of steel and conduct electricity like metals. They promise a revolution in structural and electrical engineering.
