The story of the coming-of-age of a gay teenager in South Otago during the 1970s. Picked on at school for being different, Billy's closest friend is his tomboy cousin Lou, who has her own problems coming to terms with adolescent changes to her body and her mother's attempts to get her to dress as a girl. New boy Roy causes confusion for Billy, who may finally get the friend he craves, but also has feelings of superiority and relief as Roy takes his place as butt of the school bullies.
