In a distant galaxy a benevolent republic has been replaced by an oppressive empire. Luke Skywalker, a farmer's nephew, receives a message recorded by Princess Leia, a member of the rebel group which seeks the overthrow of the Empire, who has been captured by the evil Darth Vader. The message tells him to find Obi Wan Kenobi, an old Jedi knight. Ben then teaches Luke the Jedi secrets, particularly concerning the use of The Force. He also reveals that the orphaned Luke's father had also been a Jedi knight. They hire Han Solo, a mercenary pilot, and rescue Leia. Ben is killed by Darth Vader in a duel, but the others escape. They, and the rebel forces, attack the Empire's stronghold and win an important victory. The initially ambivalent Han Solo becomes converted to the rebel cause.
