After the death of his wife, ageing Dr Fuentes decides to spend a holiday visiting his former students from a government health program, his legacy to the country. The students were sent out to remote peasant communities in poor rural and mountain villages. Fuentes is soon investigating rumours that the students have been killed by guerrillas. On the road, Fuentes encounters a peasant boy called Rabbit, an ex-soldier turned bandit, Domingo, and a priest, Padre Portillo, whose faith was lost when he ran from certain martyrdom with his fellow villagers. Fuentes' own life is put in peril, and he begins to see that, away from the city, the only law is the will of the men with guns. His journey becomes a political, moral and emotional catharsis.
