Synopsis

The twenty-fourth programme in a twenty-six part history of the 20th century, using eye-witness accounts and archive footage. Shows how the onward march of western values, taken for granted for so long, was halted on the day in Tehran in 1979 when the Shah of Iran flew into exile and the Ayatollah Khomeni returned from exile. The influence of the Islamic revolution in Iran soon spread to other Muslim states and beyond, with a resurgence in religious fundamentalism commanding huge followings throughout the world among Christians, Hindus and Jews. Includes testimonies from Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, the Sudan, Egypt and elsewhere.
