Synopsis

The eighteenth programme in a twenty-six part history of the 20th century, using eye-witness accounts and archive footage. Shows the rise of television and the growth of its mass influence. Hears from viewers in Britain, the United States, Romania and India, who tell how television changed not only their view of the world, but influenced how they voted, the way their families spent time together and the goods they bought. Archive sequences of the programmes and events that marked television's development are included. Shows how television news has changed people's perceptions and influenced governments' actions. Events featured include the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas in November 1963, the first moon landing, the Tiananmen Square massacre and the Gulf War.
