The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Part 1 (1996)

Film details

The reclusive "Mrs Graham" and her young son Arthur arrive as new tenants at Wildfell Hall. Her curtness and lack of sociability arouse the curiosity and speculation of neighbours who do not take to her. Young Gilbert Markham begins to turn his attentions away from the vicar's daughter Eliza to the newcomer. Relations between the two begin tersely but Mrs Graham begins to relax somewhat and the two often encounter each other on the moors when she is painting. However, gossip soon begins to spread about her with rumours of her landlord Mr Lawrence paying many visits, often in the evening, and she gains a bad reputation in the village. Gilbert defends her and she arranges to meet him to explain the mystery of her situation and the rumours. However, he overhears her with Mr Lawrence and fails to keep their appointment. Filled with jealousy he attacks Lawrence in the night when the latter is riding out to see Mrs Graham. The two fight and Gilbert is stunned when Mrs Graham stops the fight and reveals that Lawrence is her brother.
